Our February meeting was a magical blast. We started with a 20 minute close up magic performance by Joshua Jay. Josh performed several of his favorite card routines (oil and water) and also a few requested effects. I can only say that if there is a thing called “real” magic – we witnessed it in Josh’s hands. What an amazing and astonishing routine.

President Doug Thornton conducted the assembly business meeting covering upcoming local magic events and lectures in the area. Norm Rosen gave the “good and welfare” report and offered opportunities to participate in our hospital magic program and magic evening at the VA hospital in Lyons, NJ.

Joshua Jay presented his lecture “Talk About Tricks” – a new lecture stressing card effects. His casual, yet intense, attitude and demeanor create a relaxed and happy atmosphere and his quick wit and considerable skills create dramatic magic.

Josh’s creative mind is evidenced by the way he sees things from many angles. He explained his love for films (movies), Alfred Hitchcock (director) and the wonderful sense of suspense and surprise that can be created. Josh applies this concept to his magic.

One effect – a card is torn into four pieces and set on the table – four cards are selected from the deck – a piece of each torn off – cards and pieces returned to face down deck – the torn cards are found face up in deck – and the pieces on the table the whole time match the torn cards from the deck – perfectly.

Josh demonstrated and explained some of his popular effects like torn bill to wallet, signs, charming Chinese coins and many more.

Amazingly, and thankfully, Josh has recovered well from his boating and automobile accidents. He had lots of time to rethink his approach to magic during rehabilitation. During this time he developed his “hospital set”: from a few cards one is selected – all torn to pieces – pieces fall faceup and facedown – repeated till last piece is faceup – matches selection; two spectators – deck divided – card selected – far from performer – cards are creatively determined. Time well spent.

Josh talked about his real challenge being texture in magic; advising us to try not to perform what you like, but consider texture – texture involves great variations of effects, story line and atmosphere.

Joshua Jay’s lecture is eye opening and enlightening. His cordial approach, charming personality, entertaining style and sincere demeanor add up to a meaningful learning experience.

Don’t miss Josh when he comes to your area. Check out the photos -
